USC Upstate Foreign Language Educator Workshop - March 16

The foreign language program of the University of South Carolina Upstate presents a workshop called “Reflections” every spring for foreign language teachers, from elementary to university level, from across the state. The theme of this year’s workshop is “Teaching to the Modes of Communication: Building 21st Century Literacy.” Foreign language educators are invited to USC Upstate’s Campus Life Center Ballroom on Friday, March 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for this workshop.

Educators in South Carolina are familiar with the Integrated Performance Assessment model for designing curriculum and units of instruction. Last year’s Reflections workshop focused on designing the summative assessments. This year the focus is on teaching strategies to ensure students achieve the expectations captured in the integrated performance assessments. Participants will make the workshop experiences and content real by applying the ideas from each segment of the day to a unit they will be teaching. The goal is not to start over from scratch, but to be more purposeful and effective in reaching our learning targets.

The workshop will cover: Engaging students and developing language proficiency through a thematic focus; Unwrapping an Integrated Performance Assessment unit; Teaching to the summative assessment (teaching strategies for interpersonal communication); Teaching to the targeted proficiency level; Developing literacy (teaching strategies for interpretive communication); and Targeting feedback for improvement (expanding strategies for presentational communication).
