Camp Success Registration Open to Aiken Area Students
Aiken, SC - For the 5th year, the Silver Crescent Foundation is teaming up with area manufacturers and Aiken Technical College to host Camp Success, an educational and engaging program that fosters interest in science and engineering among area students. The weeklong camp will run daily from Monday, July 9th through Friday, July 13th from 9:00 to 4:30.
For the first time, Aiken’s Camp Success will target 9th and 10th graders with a unique program. The mornings will be dedicated to Discovery Sessions which will focus on one element of manufacturing per day with embedded exercises that reinforce critical thinking, problem solving and team work. The focus will include chemical processing, electrical, mechanical, logic controllers and safety. In the afternoon, the campers will visit area manufacturers to enhance the learning experience through plant tours as they witness firsthand the benefits engineering innovation provides in enhancing our lives.
More than a summer camp, Camp Success provides campers with hands-on projects that validate their ideas and encourage further study in engineering and technology. The camp is made possible through partnerships with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Bridgestone Firestone of South Carolina, CPM Federal Credit Union, Cytec Industries, Metso Paper, Shaw Industries, Kimberly Clark Corporation, and AGY Holding Corporation. The activities and projects the campers participate in are designed to build their interest in studying engineering, math, science and technology so they can become the skilled workforce South Carolina needs to be successful.
According to Silver Crescent Foundation President Tony Smith, these skill sets are vital to developing a strong workforce for the future. “Today’s modern manufacturing facilities require skilled and innovative workers that are not only comfortable with changing technologies but can also solve problems. We want to show students how they can use their creativity to help make people’s lives better and those jobs in engineering and manufacturing will allow them to use their science and math skills to make the world a better place.”
Parents of ninth and tenth grade students interested in attending Camp Success can download the application online at www.silvercrescentsc.org/camp.asp. The registration deadline is May 15, 2012.
