Shared Vision: Agfa HealthCare Installs Enterprise-Wide IMPAX -R- PACS at
Greenville Hospital
Business/Medical Editors
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--(BW HealthWire)--April 25, 2002--Agfa HealthCare and
the Greenville Hospital System (GHS) are more than just neighbors in
Greenville, S.C.
Their shared vision for providing enterprise-wide, browser-based
information throughout a hospital network makes them technology soul mates.
Partners for more than 30 years, the relationship between Agfa HealthCare and
GHS is a test case for teamwork. With the installation of the latest IMPAX(R)
Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) network, and ADC(TM) computed
radiography systems, Doran Dunaway, GHS vice president of information services
and CIO, says the flow of information through his five hospital complex will
rival any hospital in the country.
Specifically, the IMPAX Enterprise System (version 4.1) that is being
installed now will provide enterprise-wide management of radiology and
cardiology information for GHS' facilities and associated clinics and will
manage over 250,000 exams and reports annually. The PACS will archive 10
terabytes of storage per year on a storage area network. Redundant copies will
be stored in tape libraries. Beyond the technology itself, Agfa specialists
will work interactively with GHS staff to provide workflow analysis, project
management, and in-house and corporate applications training.
"We looked at other vendors," says Dunaway, "but we came back to Agfa.
Price was important. But Agfa also did their homework better. The biggest
things are the functionality on the Internet and being able to see all
modalities on one device. Those are huge. Agfa blew the competition away,"
Dunaway adds, "and, to tell you the truth, even if they weren't in our own
backyard, they would have blown the competition away."
The total system, which is being installed this Spring, will be a showcase
of Agfa's own vision. "This is an enterprise-wide installation," says Robert S.
Pryor, President, Agfa HealthCare and Head of Informatics, Americas, "and is
aligned closely with our commitment to provide hospitals a total imaging
solution that delivers the right information, at the right time, presented the
right way."
Established as a system to provide healthcare for Greenville County in the
late 1940s, GHS is recognized as the country's first integrated hospital
system. The 1,081-bed system now includes three acute care hospitals as well as
mental health and rehabilitation hospitals on five campuses throughout the
county. The system employs approximately 7,000 people, has approximately
148,759 Emergency Trauma Center visits per year and has more than 945
physicians on staff. Its flagship facility, Greenville Memorial Hospital,
provides research and teaching experiences for 130 residents.
GHS has made a commitment to use leading-edge imaging technology to help it
become the top ranked medical facility in the United States. Already ranked
30th in the U.S by Modern Healthcare magazine--up 58 places from last year, the
latest Agfa installation adds a dramatic boost to its drive to become number
one next year by creating positive customer impact through healthcare IT.
