South Carolina Gains Momentum in Developing Biotechnology Industries
As the biotech industry continues to make an impact on the national front
developing innovative diagnostics, medicines and research, South Carolina is
emerging on the scene to reap the benefits of this productive industry. A 2001
index lists pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and biotechnology companies that are
beginning to make a presence in the Palmetto State:
ALBEMARLE, located in Orangeburg County, manufactures bulk-additive ibuprofen
and other chemical intermediate products enabling companies to dramatically
reduce time to market for products.
BASF, in Spartanburg, has more than 500 products in the chemical-manufacturing
segment alone for pharmaceuticals, agriculture, coatings, and colorants. In
addition, BASF produces vitamin pre-mixes and surfactants.
BAUSCH & LOMB, in Greenville, manufactures ophthalmic solutions and
pharmaceuticals, including over-the-counter drugs to treat a wide range of eye
conditions.
CHARLES RIVER ENDOSAFE, located in Charleston, manufactures an in-vitro test
that finds bacterial endotoxins in blood; this testing utilizes the blood of
horseshoe crabs.
CLARIANT LSM (AMERICA) INC. has five facilities in the U.S., two of which are
in South Carolina: Elgin and Rock Hill. It is a global supplier to
pharmaceutical, agrochemical and performance materials markets.
COR PAK GROUP LLC, a nutraceutical, skin care and nutrition product
manufacturer, is located in Pickens County.
DI HO MA CHEMICAL & MFG. CO., a national producer of USDA, EPA, FDA, DEA, DOD
and GSA products, is located in Marion County and is a pharmaceutical company
which through careful research produces, tests and packages all of its own
products.
GLAXO SMITH KLINE has two plants in South Carolina: Aiken and Simpsonville.
This healthcare company develops and manufactures pharmaceutical products,
vaccines, over-the-counter medicines and health-related, consumer
personal care products.
HAEMONETICS CORPORATION, in Union County, produces I.V. solutions and
biologicals. This corporation is an avid user of our interstate system and
Charleston port area for quick transportation of its products.
ORTEC INC., located South of Greenville, is a producer of quality chemical and
hardware systems used in the wastewater treatment industry.
SCHWEIZERHALL MANUFACTURING with both a development and manufacturing
capability, located in the Greenville area, produces specialty chemicals,
pharmaceutical intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients for
commercial sale.
SERATEC BIOLOGICALS, in Sumter County, is responsible for the collection and
maintenance of plasma blood cells.
SYLCO INC., in Greer, is a specialized producer of plasma thermal spray ceramic
coatings.
While these are a few of the established pharmaceutical and nutraceutical
companies in the Palmetto State (adapted from South Carolina Commerce #24), the
good news is that the list is growing. South Carolina is possibly on
its way to becoming a site for many of the biotech industry's leading companies.
