As the tributes came for Carroll Campbell this past week, it was not surprising that South Carolina's business community gave some of the most eloquent ones.
Campbell, the former two-term governor who died Wednesday after battling Alzheimer's disease, had a finely tuned ear for business development and its importance to the state. He was described by Jim Micali, chairman and president of Michelin North America as "a visionary who worked tirelessly to secure and improve the future of South Carolina."
A Greenville native, Campbell had been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978, just after Michelin located its North American headquarters and research and development operations in the Upstate, and Micali said he "blazed the trail for South Carolina's transition into high-tech manufacturing, continuing to attract global companies."
