Caterpillar Delivers First Generator Set From Newberry Facility
Facility in South Carolina celebrates milestone of meeting customer demand for electric power in North America
Newberry, SC - Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) continues its leadership in electric power by delivering its first generator set from its new electric power manufacturing facility in Newberry, South Carolina.
“Caterpillar is able to maintain its leadership in the electric power industry because of our focus on meeting the needs of our customers,” said Bill Rohner, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for the Electric Power Division. “By producing these smaller gensets in North America, Caterpillar is now better positioned to quickly respond to customer demand for electric power in this important region. I’m proud to say the operations in Newberry play a key role in our global strategy and will further strengthen our position in the industry.”
Caterpillar announced the opening of the new facility in October of 2005 in response to increased customer demand in North America. Natural gas powered generator sets are currently being assembled at the Newberry operation. The facility will begin packaging diesel generator sets later this year. The 10-200 kW range gensets made in Newberry are typically used as backup power for smaller retail operations, homes, farms and in municipal applications. First-year employment at the facility is expected to be about 70 people.
“Our investment in Newberry is an important step to ensure Caterpillar continues to lead the electric power industry. This highly skilled, highly motivated team combined with our world-class products and dealer network, is doing just that,” said Mark Sweeney, director of Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division Global Operations.
“This is yet another milestone for Caterpillar Electric Power of Newberry,” said Joe Mulay, facility manager for Caterpillar Electric Power of Newberry. “This is the first of many successes you can expect to see from the team here in Newberry. With their focus on Caterpillar’s values of integrity, excellence, teamwork and commitment–the employees of Newberry represent the best of Team Caterpillar and I look forward to the bright future we have here together.”
At a ceremony today at the Newberry facility, the first commercially available Caterpillar generator set packaged in Newberry was delivered to Caterpillar dealer Blanchard Machinery of Columbia, South Carolina.
“As a Caterpillar dealer in South Carolina, I am proud to be part of this event today and to have this great new Caterpillar facility up and running here in the Palmetto State,” said Blanchard Machinery President Joe Blanchard.
