A Word from Dr. Yost:
Biomedical engineering applies traditional engineering expertise to analyze and solve problems in biology and medicine, providing an overall enhancement of health care. In this field there is continual change and creation of new areas due to rapid advancement in technology; however, some of the well established specialty areas within the field of biomedical engineering are: bioinstrumentation; biomaterials; biomechanics; cellular, tissue and genetic engineering; clinical engineering; medical imaging; orthopedic surgery; rehabilitation engineering; and systems physiology.
At the University of South Carolina Department of Surgery we are using engineering skills to solve problems in four key areas: New materials and techniques to regenerate lost muscle tissue for hernia repair, the creation of smart materials for wound repair, A novel resuscitation fluid for trauma patients, and finally, a novel in vitro linear heart tube to screen drug candidates for toxicity and for use as a tool to study early heart development.
These projects are aimed at improving overall health care by providing the patient with new muscle where currently they have only scar tissue, help those with chronic wounds heal faster, keep patients alive after traumatic injury and blood loss and finally, make drugs safer.
What is Science Cafe?
Columbia is lucky to have the University of South Carolina as the heartbeat of our city, yet for those of us outside of the academic system, we have very little knowledge of the amazing research that is going on in our own backyard.
The Science Cafe started in England and is based on the French Cafe Philosophique. The idea is to bring together people from all aspects of the local community to hear an informal introduction to an interesting current scientific topic, led by an expert. The goal is a truly interactive event with questions, chat, networking and discussion in a casual setting. Science Cafe isn't a class or seminar - it is simply a chance for all of us to learn more and express an opinion, expert or otherwise.
The Columbia Science Cafe is a monthly series occurring the second Tuesday of the month. Locations and topics will vary, and the organizing group is open to suggestions for both.
Everyone is Welcome!
Maybe you have always been interested in University Research, but have always been afraid to ask? Maybe you failed high school chemistry, but have secretly loved science your whole life? This event is for everyone.
Science Cafe meetings are FREE. Bar service will be available throughout the meeting for anyone who would like to buy a drink or food.
Remember seating is limited, so please be sure to RSVP.
The Columbia Science Cafe is organized by an informal group consisting of EngenuitySC and the SC Citizen School for Nanotechnology including organizers and previous class participants, as well as others from local academic and industry entities. We welcome your input, including ideas for speakers and topics. Send comments and/or questions to Rachel Card at rcard@engenuitysc.com.
You received this e-mail because you were referred by someone in the organizing group.
