Energy Research Thought Leader & Olympic Torch Designer Dr. Sam Shelton Speaks at Thornblade Charity Golf Tournament
GREENVILLE, SC (Tuesday August 22, 2007) — A special dinner and guest speaking event with Dr. Sam Shelton, Director of the Strategic Energy Initiative at Georgia Tech, will be held at The Thornblade Country Club on Monday September 10th at 6:00pm. The speaking event is preceded by a charity golf tournament at 11:30am to benefit local engineering student scholarships.
Dr. Shelton’s speech, “A New Energy Crisis: Strategic Solutions and a Mandate for New Research” is hard hitting and sure to strike a chord with others passionate about energy awareness and action. The event is open to everyone and is sponsored by the Georgia Tech Alumni Association and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
Dr. Shelton holds eight patents and has been a successful business entrepreneur, raising venture capital and founding two startup companies to develop, manufacture and market innovative energy efficient products based on new technology.
As its first Director, Dr. Shelton founded the Georgia Tech Strategic Energy Initiative in 2004, with a mission to actively engage Industry to facilitate short term, high impact energy technology development and commercialization. Over his 35 year career, Dr. Shelton has obtained research and development contracts from government and private industry totaling over $30,000,000.
As a design and manufacturing engineer, Dr. Shelton was also responsible for the engineering design and production management of the 1996 Atlanta, 2002 Salt Lake City, and 2006 Torino Olympic Relay Torches, and consulted on the development of the 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens, and 2008 Beijing torches.
