Commerce Secretary Charlie Way and Nancy Thurmond discuss BIO 2001 the annual
Conference in San Diego. This year's conference is June 24th through the 27th.
Way has assigned Doug McKay in his office to work with the South Carolina
Biotech Association.
BioPure is heading to Sumter. BioPure, based in Cambridge, Mass., develops
pharmaceuticals called oxygen therapeutics, which are intravenously
administered to deliver oxygen to the body's tissues. The company's
Oxyglobin(R) is the only oxygen therapeutic of its kind approved by the US FDA
and the European Commission and is commercially available for the treatment of
anemia in dogs.
Westinghouse Savannah River Company announces an 8 year lease for 21,000 square
foot laboratory building and office space at the Cooperative Research Center,
on the Savannah River Research campus. The new laboratory and
office space will house two sections: applied research and development
laboratory.
South Carolina Technology Summit on The New Economy, sponsored by the mayor and
the Columbia City Council, will be held at the Adam's Mark Hotel on February
22, 2001. A reception will be held on Feb 20 at SC-ETV Telecommunications
Center followed by a program and town meeting that starts 8am on February 21,

SCBA Chairman Dr. Robert Oldham, Scientific Advisor to Apovia, announced
promise of a powerful new malaria vaccine for human trials this year. The
multimillion dollar, multiyear partnership agreement between a San-Diego-based
biotechnology company, Apovia, Inc., and the Malaria Vaccine Initiative at PATH
(Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) will manufacture and license a
vaccine that could save the lives of children in the developing world,
especially Africa.
Attorney Dr. Gregory Glover presented "The Promise of Biotech" in his timely
and motivational address at the lst annual meeting of the South Carolina
Biotechnology Association (SCBA) last month. Biotechnology, one of the
most research-intensive industries in the world, is responsible for producing
more than 350 drug products and vaccines in human clinical trials in the United
States. Over 200 million people have benefited from the 90 biotechnology drug
products approved by the FDA.
