"As a longtime supporter of wild caught shrimp and the local shrimping community, the decision to offer premium product certified by Wild American Shrimp just made sense," said Steve Cox, president of Cox's Wholesale Seafood. The Tampa-based processor is one of the largest domestic shrimp processors in the state. "There has been a noticeable shift in consumer demand for a choice of high quality, locally-harvested products. By participating in the Certified Wild American Shrimp Program, we can assure consumers that the premium product they purchase from us meets their demands for quality." Noting the importance of the agreement and its support of local shrimpers, Cox continued, "We're all very proud of this decision." Shrimp processors are a key element in how shrimp gets from the catch to the plate. They purchase varieties of shrimp from local harvesters; then process and grade the product, finally distributing it to a variety of outlets including wholesale distributors, restaurants, retailers, and grocers.
The three shrimp processors join more than 50 other processors around the country who have signed on for certification since the program's debut in 2003. "By providing a certification program that requires premium standards for quality, we're creating measurable value to the industry and to consumers," stated Dennis Henderson, president of Wild American Shrimp, Inc. and Florida resident. Remarking on the industry's positive response to providing certified products harvested from coastal U.S. waters meeting high standards, Henderson continued, "It's our hope that others in the industry will join in providing Certified Wild American Shrimp to give consumers a choice."
