Furman Ranked Among Top Liberal Arts Colleges In 'Washington Monthly' Magazine

GREENVILLE, S.C.-Furman University is listed among the nation's top 30 liberal arts colleges in a new guide that rates schools in terms of their commitment to community and national service.

Published in the September 2005 issue of Washington Monthly, Furman is ranked No. 15 among the 30 "Liberal Arts" colleges selected for the list. The magazine also ranked the top 30 "National Universities."

"Other guides ask what colleges can do for you," the magazine states. "We ask what colleges are doing for the country."

Washington Monthly's rankings are designed to reflect the impact that colleges and universities are making in their communities and nation. "Universities should be engines of social mobility, they should produce the academic minds and scientific research that advance knowledge and drive economic growth, and they should inculcate and encourage an ethic of service," the magazine wrote. "We designed our evaluation system accordingly."

Factors influencing the rankings include the percentage of a school's students enrolled in ROTC and the Peace Corps, as well as the percentage of federal work study grants used for community service purposes. The magazine measured "social mobility" by determining the number of students receiving Pell Grants, and schools with high graduation rates among low-income students enjoy an added preference on the list. Research spending is also considered, along with an emphasis on the hard sciences.

In addition to appearing in Washington Monthly's college guide, the university is also ranked among the top 45 liberal arts colleges in the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings. Furman also appeared in the Princeton Review's Best 361 Colleges, was deemed a "Best Buy" in the Fiske Guide to Colleges, and was listed among America's "Top 10 Schools with Traditional Values" in The Students' Guide to College.
