Health Sciences South Carolina names new chairman
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) has named Michael C. Riordan, chief executive officer, Greenville Hospital System, as its new chairman. Riordan is the third chair of HSSC, succeeding Raymond Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., president, Medical University of South Carolina.
HSSC is a statewide collaborative between South Carolina’s research universities and its four largest health systems. The organization is focused on using health sciences research to drive economic growth and improve public health in South Carolina.
Prior to joining Greenville Hospital System in August 2006, Riordan led the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System for five years. From 1995 to 2000, he served as chief operating officer and later, senior associate hospital administrator, of Emory University Hospital and Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. He was a lieutenant for three years in the U.S. Marine Corps. A graduate of Columbia
University in New York, Riordan earned a master’s degree in education/psychology from Columbia and a master’s in health systems from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Riordan will serve a one-year term as the chair of HSSC. The vice chair is Andrew Sorensen, president, University of South Carolina.
