IBM Helps Blue Cross/Blue Shield Of South Carolina Simplify Access To Data
INTERNET WIRE -- Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina has already seen 30
percent increase in productivity and expects 100 percent return on investment
in as little as two years by moving its existing paper-based operations to the
Web using a mix of IBM technologies.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina has upgraded its IT system to process
claims in real-time, sending reimbursements to patients in days instead of
weeks. Transforming from paper to digital has helped Blue Cross Blue Shield of
South Carolina simplify the way employees and plan administrators access and
process claims data. Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina has 55
independent coverage plans in South Carolina, and three additional business
groups that provide a number of services to its members, including medical
risk-management, government-sponsored health insurance processing, and
physician practice management.
Using a number of IBM content management solutions for its Web migration,
including the company's popular DB2 Universal Database, Blue Cross Blue Shield
of South Carolina rolled out several IT digital solutions. These included an
interactive directory of health-care providers, a browser-based report
generator and a browser-based publishing engine to convert benefits booklets,
human resource materials and other documents in the company's legacy mainframe
system to HTML, JPEG and GIF files which can be more easily accessed and read
by employees.
"We have more than one billion documents archived in Content Manager OnDemand,"
said Bob Gorski, Manager of Distributed Applications, Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of South Carolina. "With the power of IBM's technology, customers are
now able to help themselves to forms and other information resources via the
Web site - significantly streamlining processes."
Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina has enhanced customer service and has
seen significant savings in paper copying, storage and mailing costs. Since
implementation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina has experienced a 30
percent increase in staff productivity, and 50 percent reduction in claims
backlog, a significant factor when one considers that they process 200,000
claims per day.
"The benefits of conducting business in a digital world are increased
productivity, and streamlined procedures which leads to better customer
service," says Dr. Armando Garcia, Vice President, Content Management Solutions
for IBM. "By incorporating IBM's digital content management solution in their
insurance claims processing, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina can now
be more accurate, knowledgeable and timely in dealing with customer claims."
