ICAR touted as example of innovation needed in U.S.
WASHINGTON -- America will continue to lose manufacturing jobs to other countries unless there is a joint effort to cluster research and development centers, graduate education programs and manufacturing facilities, experts told lawmakers Wednesday.
Clemson University's International Center for Automotive Research, anchored by a graduate program in automotive engineering involving several high-powered companies, is an example of what the experts said is the future of manufacturing.
"I have a very, very strong commitment to keeping manufacturing in this country," said Chris Przirembel, vice president of research and development at Clemson, holding up ICAR as a model of what can be accomplished when the private sector collaborates with academia in the "pursuit of profits."
He stressed that ICAR research, funded by companies including BMW, Michelin and Timken, is market-driven and not fueled by individual faculty curiosity.
