In an effort to continue to increase awareness and promotion of the biotechnology industry in South Carolina, SCETV will air the state's first biotechnology teleconference on May 29, 2001 at 8 p.m. The program will be comprised of a distinguished panel of experts which will include Patrick Kelley of BIO in Washington, DC, Dr. Kenneth Roozen, Executive Director of the Foundation for Research Development at USC and Dr. Robert Oldham, Chairman of the South Carolina Biotechnology Association. Carolyn Sawyer, owner of the Tom Sawyer Company, will host the 30 minute live broadcast of ''The Future of Biotechnology in South Carolina''.

National Biotech Week (May 13-19) was a tremendous success for all who participated. About 150 CEO's, research scientists and other biotechnology executives flew to Washington during BIO's annual Legislature Day event May 15-16, to seize the opportunity to discuss policy issues important to the industry and our mission with federal lawmakers, and to inform them of the latest advances in biotechnology. Issues addressed included: medicare reform, food and agriculture biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, prescription drug pricing, R & D tax credits and a new non-operating loss program which could provide small biotech companies immediate capital.

In addition, on May 16 President George W. Bush issued a proclamation designating May 13-20 as National Biotechnology Week. The President said ''the field of biotechnology is important to the quality of our lives, the protection of our environment, and the strength of our economy. Scientific advances have enabled biotechnology to play an increasingly large role in the development of new products that enhance all areas of our lives.''

BIO represents more than 950 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations in all 50 U.S. states and 33 other nations. BIO members are involved in the research and development of health care, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.

BIO is hosting the world's largest biotechnology event June 24-27 in San Diego at the Convention Center. This International Biotechnology convention and exhibition promises to bring together more than 10,000 industry leaders, 750 exhibitors, 350 technology investor and corporate partnering presentations and incomparable networking opportunities for South Carolina.
