Michelin 'Balance' Tire and Wheel Assembly Keeps Segway Human Transporter
Rolling Right Along
The Latest Innovation From Dean Kamen Comes Complete With Michelin Tires

GREENVILLE, S.C., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Michelin North America announced
today that the Segway(TM) Human Transporter (HT), the first-ever dynamic self-
balancing, electric powered transportation machine will come equipped with a
set of two Michelin "Balance" tires.
"This is exactly the sort of technical challenge Michelin thrives on,"
said Prashant Prabhu, head of research and development for Michelin North
America. "Innovation and constant improvement is the heart of Michelin. We
are excited to be a part of this incredible device that will change personal
mobility forever."
The Segway HT is designed to allow a person to travel farther, move
quicker and carry more anywhere they can walk. The most striking attribute of
the machine is that it self-balances. Michelin North America developed the
Michelin Balance Tire specifically for the Segway HT. Michelin also designed
the wheel and coordinates the entire tire/wheel assembly process, delivering
complete assembly units to Segway. The Michelin tire and wheel system
provides the entire suspension function for the device.
Because the Segway HT has the ability to operate over a wide variety of
indoor and outdoor surfaces, Michelin compounding insures a non-marking tire
for interior use as well as long tread life for exterior use. The uniquely
designed Michelin tread allows tires to turn either forward or backward with
precision handling, supporting the in place turning capability of the device.
Additionally, Michelin engineers delivered a tire/wheel system with low
rolling resistance for maximum energy conservation and low operating pressure
for a smooth comfortable ride.
"We've worked for several years with Michelin's design and engineering
teams to develop a tire and wheel specifically matched to the unique
characteristics of the Segway HT. Michelin's tire and wheel have become an
integral part of this incredible machine," said J. Douglas Field, Segway's
vice president for product development and chief engineer.
Businesses looking for technology solutions to mobility issues
consistently turn to Michelin. Recently, Michelin Group developed a new
radial technology, the Michelin NZG tire, which helped return the Concorde to
flight. Michelin is the sole supplier of tires to the U.S. Space Shuttle and
now the sole supplier of tire/wheel systems for the Segway HT.
