Representative Clyburn among speakers at education summit
Who: The South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, The South Carolina Commission on Minority Affairs, The South Carolina Department of Education, other partners.
What: Getting Parents Involved in Education: Leadership Actions for a New Carolina.
When: Friday, November 10, 2006, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Where: Columbia Conference Center, 169 Laurelhurst Avenue in Columbia.
Research shows that parent involvement in a child’s education is crucial in determining that child’s success in school, as an adult in the workforce, and as a member of society. Join South Carolina’s education, business, government and community leaders to explore how getting parents more involved in education will benefit not only South Carolina’s children, but also our state’s future.
The aim of the summit is to:
- Start a conversation around parent involvement among grassroots leaders,
- Connect the dots between parent involvement in education and South Carolina’s economy in both rural and urban areas, and
- Initiate a collaboration among volunteers and committed partners ready to create a statewide network and toolkit to increase parent involvement.
The summit will include presentations, a panel discussion, and workshop sessions for attendees. Speakers at the event will include U.S. Congressman James Clyburn; Ed Sellers, chairman and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina; Mark Glenn, the president of Venture Industries in Rock Hill; and officials from the S.C. Department of Education, the S.C. School Improvement Council, the S.C. Education Oversight Committee and various school districts across the state (visit www.newcarolina.org/parents-in-education for more details).
