CHARLESTON - The Medical University of South Carolina conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on Clemson University President James F. Barker. MUSC President Ray Greenberg and Provost and Vice President for Academics John Raymond presented the degree at the MUSC board of trustees' meeting Dec. 11.

Barker was cited by MUSC for his "remarkable vision and leadership" as Clemson's president, being a "driving force in the early successes of the Centers of Economic Excellence," of which MUSC and the University of South Carolina are partners. MUSC and Clemson also have collaborated in other academic initiatives, including the joint bioengineering program.

"I accept this honorary degree on behalf of the faculty, staff and students at Clemson University," Barker said. "I stand simply as their representative."

Barker said the three universities - Clemson, MUSC and USC - place South Carolina ahead of other states' research university systems.

"If we stop for a moment and consider the collective strength in higher education we have in South Carolina we are truly one of America's finest," he said.
