Milliken and Company Achieves Five Years Certified Carbon Negative
(November 10, 2009) – Milliken & Company announces its fifth year as the only certified carbon negative textile and chemical manufacturer. Milliken generates carbon credits internally without purchased offsets.
To achieve this status, the company works with the Leonardo Academy to inventory of emissions that include a measure of 1) direct energy use on all sites and the emissions caused by electricity used; 2) Level 4 Category of Green House Gas Emissions, which means that carbon dioxide and the other five major green house gases have been addressed; and 3) emissions sequestered in Milliken’s forests.
Milliken has quantified its status since 1990. As a demonstration of its dedication to transparency and footprint reduction, when a third-party process was developed, Milliken worked with Leonardo Academy to complete the review.
To reduce its footprint, Milliken continues to explore alternative energy sources; to reduce energy consumption and related emissions in operations; and to follow principles of sound stewardship in managing forests. Other benchmarks in sustainable operations include:
• 23 years of PVC-free carpet
• 10 years of zero waste to landfill from carpet manufacturing
• 40 years of global on-site environmental management
• 109 years of recycling
• 55 years of tracking water and energy use
Milliken & Company, a founding member of US Green Building Council (USGBC) champions sustainable principles and practices internally and in partnership with others. Together with USGBC, the company annually recognizes the achievements of local USGBC organizations around the country by presenting the annual Chapter Awards of Excellence during Greenbuild.
