A division of a major pharmaceutical company is launching new research and
development in Greenwood in a step forward for South Carolina's push to develop
the life sciences industry.
Capsugel, a division of Pfizer Inc. with an existing plant in Greenwood, has
leased 2,100 square feet in the South Carolina Biotechnology Incubation
Facility, said Karl B. Kelly, chief executive of SC Bio, an organization
created to promote the biotech industry.
State officials launched the six-laboratory "incubator" in 2001 to nurture
biotech startup companies.
The new Capsugel operation will employ between five and eight people initially
and get under way in the next month or two, Kelly said Friday.
"This is an expansion of the local, existing facility for some new concepts
they want to develop," he said.
Linzell L. Harris, a vice president with Capsugel in Greenwood, declined to
comment.
