Tuesday's announcement to build a multimillion dollar research and medical
education center at Greenville Memorial Hospital is among the first steps of
the South Carolina Health Sciences Collaborative to position the state to
become one of the top centers in the nation.
The Collaborative, unveiled last April, is a partnership of the Greenville
Hospital System, the University of South Carolina, the Medical University of
South Carolina and Palmetto Health of Columbia.
It's important to the region not only for its promise of improved health care,
but for its potential to bring high-paying jobs. The Collaborative's mission is
to push health sciences research and spur economic development while improving
the health of South Carolinians.
Each of the partners is putting up $2 million a year over a decade, which would
be eligible for matching state funds for a potential 10-year investment of $160
million.
