Salute to Manufacturing Awards Luncheon to be held May 15

COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 26, 2007) – The twelfth annual Salute to Manufacturing Awards Luncheon will be held from noon – 1:30 p.m. May 15 at the Carolina First Center (formerly the Palmetto Expo Center) in Greenville. The luncheon celebrates the vitality of manufacturing in South Carolina and engages more than 400 leaders in business, education and government in programs that connect young people to careers in manufacturing, engineering and technology.

State Education Superintendent Dr. Jim Rex and President of the South Carolina Technical College System Dr. Barry Russell will speak. Many business leaders will be available for interviews before and after the event.

As part of the luncheon, the 2007 Silver Crescent Awards for Manufacturing Excellence will be presented. This annual recognition, now in its sixth year, was established to honor outstanding small, medium and large manufacturers and promote the importance of manufacturing to our standard of living and quality of life in the Palmetto State. The award serves to increase awareness of the importance of manufacturing among the general public.

Student winners of the sixth annual Manufacturing Design Competition will also be announced during the luncheon. Winners have been chosen from finalists in three categories, including t-shirt design at the high school level, tote bag design at the middle school level and placemat design at the elementary level. First place winners receive a $400 scholarship, second place winners receive a $200 scholarship and third place winners receive a $100 scholarship. In addition, the sponsoring teacher of the first place winner in each category will be awarded $300.
