SC Citizens School of Nanotechnology
The SOUTH CAROLINA CITIZENS' SCHOOL of NANOTECHNOLOGY for FALL 2007 BEGINS WEDNESDAY 12 SEPTEMBER at 6:30 PM in SUMWALT 102
The USC NanoCenter and Benedict College will offer the South Carolina Citizens’ School of Nanotechnology (SCCSN) for Fall 2007, beginning WEDNESDAY 12 September at 6:30 PM on the USC campus.
These sessions for adults will meet for seven consecutive Wednesday evenings from 12 September through 24 October. All sessions will meet in the Sumwalt Building, Room 102. The cost is $30 for the entire SCCSN.
Nanotechnology is an important family of technologies which study and manipulate matter that is measured in by the nanometer, that is, one-billionth of a meter. A water molecule (H2O), for example, is about a third of a nanometer.
The SCCSN is a consumer-friendly outreach program for people who are curious about nanotechnology and want a general introduction. Participants do not need to have any expertise in science or engineering.
“Nanotechnology is changing our world in areas like our health, our computers, and our economy,” says Tom Vogt, Ph.D., Director of the USC NanoCenter. “The Citizens’ School of Nanotechnology brings nanotech to the residents of Columbia so that all of us can have a voice in nanotechnology policy. While nanoscience might have the first word on what type of society we can build, it will not have the last word on what type of society we will build."
Faculty in disciplines ranging from Chemistry to Philosophy will introduce nanotechnology to the participants. The SCCSN features a series of background readings, presentations by faculty, and two-way discussions. Participants receive a package of very readable articles to accompany each session.
Topics in the SCCSN include: nanomedicine; history of nanotechnology; environmental implications of nanotechnology; and nanotech in science fiction.
A special feature will be a visit to two science labs. Participants will see the instruments that make nanotech possible, and they will see nano-scale phenomena like atomic surfaces as they are imaged in real time.
A limited number of seats are available for the SCCSN. Participants are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible.
