Commerce to lead S.C. trade mission to Canada

Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Department of Commerce will lead a week-long trade mission for companies from South Carolina looking to export their products and services to Canada. The group will arrive in Toronto, Canada and be received by South Carolina’s former Speaker of the House, Ambassador David H. Wilkins, with a special reception. The delegation will then travel to Montreal for more business meetings.

“We’re excited about being able to partner with Ambassador Wilkins in order to make the most of this event in Canada,” says Secretary of Commerce Joe E. Taylor. “This is our time to spotlight South Carolina products to Canadian markets, and we welcome the opportunity to help our state’s businesses learn firsthand about the benefits of exporting to Canada.”

Canada is the United States’ #1 trading partner, and this past year surpassed Germany as the state’s lead export market. Moreover, US products are typically 25 percent less expensive for Canadian importers due to the strong Canadian dollar.

“As it stands now, the delegation is as diverse as the companies in our state,” said Amy Thomson, Commerce’s Export Development Manager for the Americas. “This is the perfect opportunity for small businesses to show strength in numbers by traveling with this delegation and meeting with potential representatives for their products in this market.”

The trade mission will take place June 19-22, 2006 and is sponsored by the US Department of Commerce, SC Department of Commerce, SC Export Consortium and SC District Export Council.
