Science Cafe Hosts Second Meeting in Columbia, South Carolina
Scheduled for September 12, 2006
---
Speaker: Dr. Duncan A. Buell
Professor and Chair, Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Topic: How Our Life Online, Can Get Our Life Out of Line: Data Mining, Networks, and Behavior
We are now painfully aware of the vast amount of data online that is available for both use and misuse. This talk will cover some of the issues in storing, retrieving, and protecting that information.
Critical to protecting that data is the ability to detect by automatic means attempts to access that data that are anomalous compared to "normal" access. We will discuss briefly how this is done and, unfortunately, why data security will continue to be a major issue in the long term.
Date: Tuesday, 12 September 2006
Time: 6pm
Location: Hush - Located in the Vista directly across from Mellow Mushroon

What is Science Cafe?
Columbia is lucky to have the University of South Carolina as the heartbeat of our city, yet for those of us outside of the academic system, we have very little knowledge of the amazing research that is going on in our own backyard.
The Science Cafe started in England and is based on the French Cafe Philosophique. The idea is to bring together people from all aspects of the local community to hear an informal introduction to an interesting current scientific topic, led by an expert. The goal is a truly interactive event with questions, chat, networking and discussion in a casual setting. Science Cafe isn't a class or seminar - it is simply a chance for all of us to learn more and express an opinion, expert or otherwise.
The Columbia Science Cafe is a monthly series occurring the second Tuesday of the month. Locations and topics will vary, and the organizing grou p is open to suggestions for both.
Everyone is Welcome!
Maybe you have always been interested in University Research, but have always been afraid to ask? Maybe you failed high school chemistry, but have secretly loved science your whole life? This event is for everyone.
Science Cafe meetings are FREE. Bar service will be available throughout the meeting for anyone who would like to buy a drink or food.
Remember seating is limited, so please be sure to RSVP.
