South Carolina Manufacturing Jobs Down 2.1%
EVANSTON, Ill., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- South Carolina's manufacturing job losses have continued over the past 12 months, according to the 2007 South Carolina Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports South Carolina lost 7,085 manufacturing jobs and 60 plants since September of 2005, prolonging the downward trend the state has experienced since 2001.
According to Manufacturers' News, South Carolina lost 53,000 manufacturing jobs since September 2001, dropping at an average rate of 3.5% per year.
"Many South Carolina companies, historically in the textile industries and more recently in the automotive industries, are finding much better deals in China and India," said Tom Dubin, President of MNI. "However, this year's comparatively smaller loss of 2% may signify better days ahead for the Palmetto State."
Manufacturers' News reports South Carolina is now home to 5,796 manufacturing companies employing 316,437 workers compared to the 5,856 plants and 323,522 jobs reported a year earlier. MNI's survey profiles both large and small South Carolina manufacturers, including start-up companies with just a few employees.
Greenville remains the state's top manufacturing city with 458 plants and 26,659 jobs listed in the 2007 edition. Columbia is the state's 2nd largest manufacturing city with 296 plants and 26,659 jobs.
MNI reports South Carolina's top industries by employment are motor vehicle parts and accessories with 15,937 jobs and plastic products representing 14,047 jobs.
Detailed information on all of South Carolina's 5,796 companies can be found in the 2007 South Carolina Manufacturers Register, available in print for $99.
