Winners Announced at the 2006 InnoVision Awards Dinner
Greenville, SC, November 16, 2006— Last evening, six Upstate organizations were honored as 2006 InnoVision Technology Awards winners for demonstrating advancements in innovation and technology. Accomplishments of an additional five finalists were also highlighted at the Awards Dinner held at the Palmetto Expo Center. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Richard L. Garwin, an internationally renowned physicist.
More than 300 attended the Awards Dinner, which featured video highlights of the accomplishments of the 11 finalists. Winners in each category were announced as noted below.
Awards are presented annually in five categories: Technology Development, Technology Application, Small Enterprise, Community Service and Innovation in Education. In addition, an individual is presented each year with the Charles Townes Individual Achievement Award. Townes was an Upstate native, inventor of the maser and laser, a Nobel Laureate in physics, and one of America’s most honored scientists.
In 2005 a Young Innovator Program was established, designed to recognize successful programs that support our youth, to raise awareness about the need for more programs in this area, to generate support of such programs from the Upstate business community, and to influence these young innovators to remain in the Upstate as they continue their education and launch their careers.
The InnoVision Technology Awards program, founded in 1999 by Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, recognizes and honors businesses, individuals and organizations that have demonstrated significant advancements in the areas of innovation and technological progress. It is considered the premier awards program focused exclusively on celebrating achievements in the South Carolina Upstate region and the counties of Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, and Union. Technology Development Winner
Two-year-old Innegrity LLC received the Technology Development Award for its product called Innegra E, a fiber designed to bring the performance of high frequency military electronics substrates into consumer high frequency applications such as personal computers, laptops, servers, wireless communications, and cellular telephones. High frequency electronics are currently limited to two choices of circuit board substrates: Teflon-glass composites, which perform well but are too expensive for mainstream application; and epoxy-glass composites, which, while less expensive, lead to energy and data loss. Innegra E combines the best of both existing electronics while utilizing less expensive materials in a much more efficient manner.
Technology Application Winner
eBridge Solutions received the Technology Application Award for its efforts in developing enterprise software for leaders in industries ranging from apparel to flexible packaging for over a decade. In response to a specific need of one of their clients, eBridge developed ISOURCE, a complete Product Life Cycle Management (PLCM) web portal. ISOURCE provides the portal-enabled product design team real-time communication with vendors and incorporates a document management system that allows for maintenance of version history, and automatic compressions of files selected for download.
Small Enterprise Winner
Glucotec, Inc. received the Small Enterprise Award for its efforts to improve the lives of hospital-based patients by providing healthcare professionals with integrated metabolic management systems that result in improved glycemic control and corresponding clinical and financial outcomes. The company’s newest device is the Glucommander software. Installed on a touch-screen tablet computer, the Glucommander is used to calculate the level of medication doses necessary to regulate hyperglycemia in patients with elevated blood sugars. Using a proprietary algorithm, Glucommander determines each patient’s individual sensitivity to insulin, and determines the strength and concentration of intravenous fluids required to bring blood sugars back to a pre-determined target range.
Community Service Winner
The Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE International, is the recipient of this year’s Community Service Award. SAE, which has more than 90,000 engineers, business executives, educators, and students from more than 97 countries, developed A World in Motion: Challenge 1, an educational kit for fourth, fifth and sixth grade students. Students participate in exciting and relevant hands-on science and math experiences involved with Challenge 1, activities that include the development of a skimmer or jet toy. Each challenge is directed towards one or more specific grade levels from elementary school to high school. Within each challenge there are hands-on activities which require students to actively engage themselves in an engineering design experience relative to the professional world, creating an exciting educational atmosphere with encouraging outcomes. Thirty-three schools in five Upstate counties have incorporated SAE International’s A World in Motion curricula. !
The program brings important engineering principles to life through highly interactive learning experiences, encouraging students to make a commitment to a continued education in math and science.
Innovation in Education Winners
TetraData Corporation and Clemson University both were recipients of the Innovation in Education Award. TetraData Corporation is a growing software engineering company exclusively focused on reaching and sustaining high performance in K-12 education. This privately-held company has developed new software called DASH - that enables its users to monitor the indicators of success in their school system.
Clemson University’s mechanical engineering department has developed an intense two-week course that provides engineering students with a real-world experience of product development. During the course, students face issues from patent development and product innovation to group dynamics and project management.
Dr. Charles Townes Individual Achievement Award
Jerry Cogan, retired President of Milliken Research Corporation, Spartanburg, SC, received the 2006 Dr. Charles Townes Individual Achievement Award in recognition of his tireless efforts to enhance research in the textile and chemical industries and improve his local community.
Cogan joined Milliken Research Corporation in his early 30s, where he served as President for approximately 40 years prior to his retirement in 2001. Under his guidance, MRC developed breakthrough products such as VISA®, a process by which polyester fabrics develop sorption and soil release traits; and Millitron®, a machine and process by which individual carpeting can be jet dyed in specific patterns while on the manufacturing line.
Cogan also invests much of his time in the community. He has served on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity in Spartanburg, on the Board of Trustees for Wofford College, as President of the Literacy Foundation, and as a Choir member at the Church of the Advent. In 1980 he was named as the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, and in 2001 was named the Innovation Award recipient for Textile Industries.
Young Innovator Awards
Teams from Clemson Elementary School and Crestview Elementary School were recognized for their participation in the Odyssey of the Mind program. Odyssey of the Mind is a non-profit program run completely by volunteers. It is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students form kindergarten through college. In Odyssey of the Mind, students learn skills at a young age that will last a lifetime. They work in teams and learn cooperation and respect for the ideas of others. They also evaluate ideas and make decisions on their own, plus they work within a budget and learn to manage their money.
